Happy February dear friends!

In January, we had fairytales to dream up and keep us company! And with February upon us, I’m very excited for the theme I’ve decided on to take us through the month of love. But before we get to that, I thought it would be fun to look back at the fairytales and go through what I learned about backgrounds and lighting, and do a step by step of how I approached my illustration for Golidlocks and the Three Bears.

I really enjoyed stepping back from how I usually do things and taking the time to really focus on lighting and backgrounds.

The main thing I learned about backgrounds is - don’t be so scared. It’s the same thing as drawing people. Sketch, lines (or no lines!) base colours, shadows, lighting. No sweat. But it is worth taking a breath before starting, and really plan it out so that the background can work to lead the viewers eye around the canvas. I knew this before this month, but when it came time to drawing, I always forgot before I started drawing. SO, it was really good to focus and try to get the background and lighting right.

What did I learn about lighting? Kinda the same thing but with a couple little tricks I thought I’d share in a step by step run through of the Goldilocks drawing!
