Authorstrator Listy List
A round up of recommendations from my TBR, watch list and other stuff
It's time again for the Authorstrator Listy List!
If you missed it last month, the Authorstrator Listy List is a roundup of what I think are the most interesting bits and bobs I collect for all the lists I keep in my notebook over the course of the month! I decided to try this out because I am having a hard time getting book and show recommendations these days, and the best recs I get come from folks I know, artists and authors I follow, and people who’s tastes I trust. By sharing my recs on the Listy List, I hope you find something you love or at least, something to add to your own many lists. I'll be sending the Authorstrator Listy List every month, and as always, don't be shy! I invite you to share your latest finds with us in the comments!
Here we go!
The Reading List
Articles
‘s newsletter provides so many great drawing tutorials, I really can’t recommend her enough. I learned a lot from her Patreon but now that she’s active on Substack, there’s so much of her amazing content for illustrators to find! wrote a great post encouraging writers to dream big and set goals. I dream, sure, but never thought of setting these daydreams as actual goals. And you know, this post has me thinking I need to change that.If you’re looking for a bit of a challenge to inspire your fiction writing,
hosts writing challenges with really great prompts and hosts a great community to connect with readers and other writers!Books
The Spear Cuts Through Water by Simon Jiminez - a friend recommended this to me and after checking out the first page, the writing was really lyrical and lovely so I am going to give this one a go.
The New Girl by Cassandra Calin - Calin's comics on the gram always make me laugh out loud and the cover for The New Girl - I mean, LOOK at it. I had to have it. If the book is half as charming as her comics, this is going to be a treat.
La Coeur en Braille by Joris Chamblain - I’ll admit, as a Canadian my French is woefully more limited than is acceptable, but I really love the art of bande desinée style comics and this one looked so beautiful, I had to buy it just for the art alone!
The Watch List
Moana 2 trailer - Did we need a Moana 2? I dunno. I think we’re all a bit burnt out on remakes and sequels and prequels but I loved the first Moana so much and I will follow The Rock anywhere so I’m looking forward to this.
Ren Faire - Strong Tiger King vibes, and only 3 episodes long, this was an interesting time-waster about a massive renaissance fair in Texas as it struggles to decide who will succeed the aging owner.
House of the Dragon - I know, I know! Everyone panned the first season because…the show was poorly lit? Also, its quite bit more joyless from GOT (everyone in the show is very very serious). And of course, I have a lot of feels about the lack of dragons in a show about dragons (perhaps best saved for a ranty rant later) but I do really love Westeros. And even though we all had complaints about the last season of GoT and thoughts about the first season of House of the Dragon (I will never get over THAT SCENE with the queen giving birth that I watched unwittingly when I was 8.5 months pregnant) I am finding myself very eager to return to this series. Warring queens with a complicated history? Yes. My expectations are high for this one, I can’t help it!
The Shopping List
Ferris Wheel Press fountain pen inks! - So I am a nut for ink and I am lucky enough to be a creative ambassador for Ferris Wheel Press which is a stationery company here in Canada. I receive free inks to use, share and review and receive a small commission when customers use my code to make a purchase. I really love their shimmer inks and these are the inks I mostly use when I’m drawing or writing with my dip pens. They ship worldwide and my new ambassador code (JA-MEG) gives you 15% off your purchase! I really wanted to share with you in this edition of the Listy-List because you can apparently stack my 15% off code ON TOP of whatever promotion they have going on at a given time and I do believe on June 18 they are having a new promotion. So if you are looking for some new inks for your drawing or writing creative projects, feel free to use my code and grab a bottle of inky fun!
What’s on your lists this month?
"Do we need another Moana?" was my thought exactly when I saw the remake. I am looking forward to how they handle Inside Out 2. We're pretty invested in mental health in our house so I hope it's well done.
Watch list? Still working through Monk and I watched a filtered version of Murder Mystery 2 and LOVED it. Jennifer Aniston and Adam Sandler make a great pair.
Reading list: I recently discovered Jenny Proctor's books and am slowly working my way through them. Hoping to read a friend's book that won an award next, The Trespassers.
Reading for Writing: I think I'd like to finish Emotional Craft in Fiction by Donald Maass. I'm also just tyring to make progress on my next book. First draft done, now it's time for the second!
I'm absolutely with you on the Disney/Pixar remakes...says the girl with tickets for Inside Out 2 this afternoon.
As for my list, I absolutely blasted through The Mentalist (give me ALLLLL the damaged middle aged men idek) and am now really digging Inspector Lewis on BritBox. Honestly BritBox has given me all my fave stuff lately (River, The Cleaner, Miranda).
